Both my brother and a dear friend of mine graduated from college during the COVID-19 pandemic, and, as such, their graduation ceremonies were cancelled. Both were devastated about missing out on such a milestone event, as well as the opportunity to gather with friends and family to celebrate. To remind them how proud of them we are, I created each of them a graduation map showing how far reaching the support for them during this crazy time was, using Mapbox GL JS. I reached out to their friends and family members to have them submit ~30 second videos wishing them congratulations and uploaded them to private YouTube links. Each person who submitted a message got a point on the map, represented by a custom icon I designed for each of their schools' logos, with the addition of a graduation cap on top, and on-click these linked to the YouTube video.
