Daniel Huffman, one of the cartography instructors I have had at UW-Madison, is a big proponent of the idea that black and white maps are just as powerful and interesting as color maps. So, he challenged us to create a map in black and white using only data that could be found in a table on Wikipedia. It was a great exercise in understanding how to use greyscale to your advantage.
